Post office and post boxes in my country

A short history of the post office

Post boxes are not the same all over the world. They have their own history and some of them are small pieces of art. Next time you pass by a post box, letter box, mail box or as you like to call it, take a closer look.

Ierissos Junior High School

Today, we took advantage of the beautiful weather, and with a group of students, we visited our local post-office. We took some photos and asked the post office clerk to inform us about the letter distribution system. The students will spread the information they got to the rest of the students who participate in our project and upload it on our special page and our blog. Hellenic post! We the Greeks are Hellenes, Greece is Hellas.

Student's Report of our visit to the post office

In case someone wants to send a letter, he has to go to the local post office. There he buys a stamp, the price of which depends on the destination of the letter and its weight. Then he give the letter to the clerk in the post office.
All the letters are collected and they are sent to Thessaloniki when the post office is closed at 3 o'clock.

In Thessaloniki, the letters are separated according to their destination. However some letters are sent to Athens and from there to their final destination. A night, the latest, they are sent to their recipients in different destinations.

A series of stamps circulated to commemorate the 190 years of Hellenic Post.
Here goes the story: On 24 September 1828, the first governor of Greece, Ioannis Kapodistrias, signed the XVII resolution issued on Poros "for the establishment of a regular postal service", thereby founding the "General Post". 190 years later Hellenic Post still plays a leading role in Greece in postal services. It is Greece's oldest company.

Post Boxes in Czeck Republic
Looking for information on Czeck Republics postal services, I came across something I thought it existed only in the movies. I found about the "Pneumatic postal services" in Prague. What is that? Let's find out together.
The artcilce says "The Prague pneumatic post (Czech: Pražská potrubní pošta) is the world’s last preserved municipal pneumatic post system. Once the dream of modern technology, the very thought of sending messages and parcels zipping through miles of tubes, powered by air pressure and vacuums, most of these pneumatic dispatches have all but disappeared."
Many big cities had that system. Let's see how it works.

Post Boxes in Italy
Italy, letters, Romeo and Juliette...
In this mail box you can wirte a letter to Juleitte! Isn't it unique in its kind?
Let's see some more. We can find many photos of mail boxes on the internet. It is seems that they attract the photographers' attention by their design, their decorations, their shape. Maybe it is the romantic idea of communication through letter writing. There are in many shapes and designs and they have a certain mystery someitmes.
LETTERE
The owner of this mail box seems to be quite artistic. S/he creates a beautiful design which expands the box and elevetes it to art. An everyday object becomes art.
Although they are not so artistic, their shape and colour seem to juxtapose their purpose and create something intersting to look at.
This is an old Italian letter box or "Cassetta per le lettere".
This one was found in Naples. Really beautiful.
These are form Rome and ...an old  one from Venice. Can you see the face? The manufacturer probably had an humouristic perspective and gave to this ordinary object a unique character.

In Spain we spotted a unique kind of mail box, the ceramic mail box, in beautiful colours and designs.
Another characteristic mail or letter box is "la buca". A letter box with the head of a lion and the opening for the letter is its mouth.
Of course we found similar to he other countries, especially the modern ones.
And some older ones, more decorative,
and some very different but all very but very interesting and beautiful in their own special ways. This one is form Alhambra.
